RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION.
SAVING THE CHILDREN—AXD THE STATE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. An animated discussion took place at the Anglican Synod this afternoon 011 the question of religious instruction for the young. The matter was introduced by the Rev. \V. G. Alonckton, who moved that the time has come when all Christ ans should unite in establishing and supporting Christian schools and'repudiating a system of education that is avowedly wholly secular. He had put his resolution ill that form instead 0: urging the teaching of the Bible h schools because he believed that the only thing to do was for Christians to esublish and support their own schools. The aim and object of the State in giving education was not the aim and object of the Christian, lie did not appeal to the State to save Christianity, but to Christianity to save the State. , lie urged them to follow the example set by Roman Catholics in the education of their young people. The l!ev. Canon Fould seconded the motion. The Re\-. 11. Reeves moved, as an amendment, that a committee be set up to report 011 j the matter to the next Synod, and this i proposal was carried.
