Dickie, the liovernuient candidate for Selwyn, opened his campaign on Slonday night at Lyndhurst, when he addressed a well-attended meeting. Mr. Dickie said he was a warm supporter of the land legislation of the Liberal Government. It would be a mistake to grant the freehold to the Crown tenants who had taken the leaie-itt-perpetuity, but in future all successful applicants should have the option of tenures if the choice was made on the day of the ballot. The bai-K-Wocks settlers should certainly liay< the option of acquiring the frecho.d and he would be in favor oi letting their liave the first five years rent free, jit was in favor of the present licensing law being continued with, a tliree-flftns majority. He was a believer in the present education system. The candidate was accorded a vote of thanks.
GHRISTCHURCH SOUTH SEAT. Christehimh, Last Night, J. Thorn, Socialist and Labor candidate for Christchureh South, addressed a meeting of electors tonight. lit> stated he was opposed to the present Government, but would not support Opposition. He would join a Labor party in the House. He spoke in favor of socialistic reforms, gnd was accorded I ft vote of thanks and confidence.
