TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Aroha won both open hurdle races at llawke's Bay in the easiest possible manner. The New Zealand 'chaser Pilot,, who gathered in (he Enfield .Steeple and Hunt Club Cup at the National meeting and afterwards scored at JUndwics, was sold to a Sydney sportsman last week for £3OO. The sale was subject to Mr. G. 11. Wilson's approval. California's wind in the King Edward Handicap at Hastings mulcts the chestnut with a 51b penalty for the Wellington Handicap, bringing his load up to Ost 71b—top weight. Auckland jockey C. Brown topped winning riders at Hawke's Bay, scoring on Master Delaval, lilysian, ami Master . f>oult. C. Jenkins piloted Ivopu mid Rangipapa first past the post, and A. OUiver was up on Downfall and Expansion. Mr. J. Allen rode Aroha in both the gelding's victories. Kopu, who upset a. warm favorite in Aborigine in the Hawke's Bay Guineas, is a chestnut 3-year-old colt by San Fran from the St. Leger mare Maude, and is a half-brother to California, in whose footsteps he is expected to follow. Kopu races in the "Black and heliotrope" of Mr. W. J. Douglas, and was splendidly handled in the Guineas l.v Charlie Jenkins. Aborigine and Goid Lace made play to the distance, and looked like monopolising the totalisator dividends when Kopu dashed up, and, finishing gamely, downed the "hot stuff" by a head. Gold Lace was the same distance behind Aborigine, but Stead's Nobel was never dangerous. IPenalties keep piling on. Both Dowifall and Master Soult incurred (penalties for the New Zealand Cup by their wins at Hastings. Master Delaval and Lamsdorff escaped penalties. The luck of racing! Parsee, who won the A.J.C. Derby, was picked up for 5.y/„ guineas, whilst Golden Slipper, who finished last, cost 4")00 guineas. "•Toe" Silberlicrg, a once well-known Sydney bookmaker, who won the A. I.C. Derby with Woodlands, defeating the sensational Chester, bad quaint ways. On one occasion when wishing to impress a jockey upon the gravity of t'ie situation, he remarked earnestly. "!f you don't vin, up goe s der blomnin' donkey." The Otaki and Napier Pari; spring meetings open to-morrow, and a- a number of New Zealand Cup and Stewards' Handicap candidates are engaged at these meetings punters will hare more, light shed upon the problems which are at present worrying them—"What will win the Cup! 'what looks best in the Stewards'!"
