line, yet when the Government was yielding to the pressure. Mr. Ifine accused them of jerrymandering and of putting men on the works to intluence the election. A man who took up this position was working against tihe best interests of Taranaki, particularly nor., thern Taranaki, which the line must feed. Personally hie would prefer that the Government put on 1000 men in-

stead of the 357 now employed. After replying to a number of questions Mr. Bdlringer was accorded a vote of thanks. Afterwards the ladiys of the place provided and dispensed refreshments. Mr. Uellringer speaks at Omata to-night, and at Tataraimaßa to-mor-row.

I llr. William Clirystal, formerly chief d< * .-ctive at Chrischurch, who resigned recently, is announced as a candidate for the Christehureh East seat. He is standing as an advanced Radical. One of the Government candidates for the Kgmont 'seat (Mr. Astbury) has been addressing the electors throughout til" week, and though the meetings havl>-jiot been as well attended as no doubt the candidate would like, y«t those who have turned up at Oaonui,. Raliotu, Pungarehu, Newell Road, and Kalmi Road schools have listened to h common-sense address on political matters. Mr. Astbury leaves one with the impression of having an independent political thought, and while agreeing in the main with the present Administration, yet criticises fearlessly anything that does not fit in with his political views. Hi s knowledge of the district's requirements and the training he has received as a settler by being associated with local administration, especially Taranaki requirements, and his great ability as a speaker, should commend

him to the electors in making their choice. —Own correspondent. Mr. J. B.
