Subscriptions for the purchase of llie skelc'on of til. l Okarito whale for the Canterbury Museum continue to come jjlowly. Some £llO of the £2OO requir»d fn:m the public is now in hand. .Mr E. R. It represents absolutely tlie largest boast that has been known to exist in present or former tinuN. The whale in life was about K7ft' long. A casual review shows this week'H »Sit])reme Court vsession to be unique. First of all, there wns the fact that '.he whole of the business was completed before the middle of the third day—and business was certainly not hurried. Then look at the verdicts. In the criminal business a lad was practically let off with a caution, and another offender bound over to keep the peare. Coiniug to civil "business, n claim for £5Ol damages van rewarded with a verdict for 40s damages. Another claim for £2OO damages was settled for £25 and disbursements. Seventy-eight in the service of one family is the record just attained by a Hampshire gardener who began to work when he was twelve year# old 1 and is still working. He celebrated his ninetieth birthday on 19th August. Petroleum has recently been discovered in Patagonia. For .some considerable time boring has been going on there, and nccntly very good oil has been struck. So far the winter in the south (says the -Argentine correspondent of the Lyttelton Times, writing on Ist July), has 'been of the mildest. In Tien'a del Kuego and i'unta Arenas all outside occupations such as mining and sluicing are shut down each winter. The whole country is given over to King Frost. This year the Creat White King lias not -so far put in an appearance. .Dredges and mines are shut down, and Die men have all found lheir way into the rent its of civilisation., but so far the ginni. with the all-powerful grip has not looked round. As a result, everyone is prophesying an early spring and a good winter. Sloekowncrs are in good spirits, for, although the price of wool is not too good, stock arc standing the winter better than they have for some years past. A Dunediu telegram published the other day indicated that the Saivation i Arinv had been saved £IBOO by a decision of Mr. Justice Williams that they need not pay duly on a certain bequest. The legacy in question was left by I Mr. Samuel Wilson, oi Awamoko, near Papakaio, Otago. Mr. Wilson left all his property, to the value of £35,000, in four parts, of which two were given to the Presbyterian Church for various works in Otago, and two were devoted to the social work of the Salvation Army in \ew Zealand. The Army's share was practically half of the C35.00H. Lieut.-Colonel Knight received
a chetjne for .C 1 o,U(H) on behalf of the bequest, and then the question of stamp duty was raised. The Army objected to paying duly on the ground that the money was being devoted to purely charitable work, and this view has now been jndieallv endorsed.
It is strange that whilst the Pre.is Association kept us posted regarding I lie various stages of the New York to Paris motor-car race, il did not tell the .story of the finish. We learn by mail that although Lieutenant Koeupen and the Cerinau Protos car were the first to arrive at* Paris, three days ahead of the American Thomas car, it is the latter whieb will eventually be awarded the C2OOO prize for the aeross-the-worhl trip. Onlv two cars remained in the competition, th" Protos having been disqualified foj- taking the train in the beginning, on the run through the I'nited Slates from Ogden to Seattle, ami, again, for omitting to traverse Japan. The only competing cars from Yladivosloek were the Thomas and the Ziist. The (ierman Protos, notwithstanding iis di-qualification, hu« put in a claim for the prize. As the American car gained fifteen days on the on the run from New York to Seattle, and this lead was placed to L* credit on the second stage of the journey. it would have still been the winner. even hnd the Protus not been disqualified lor riding in the train. On their arrival in Paris the car.? created bui little excitement.
