A PROTEST.
To the Editor. Sir,—Permit me a few lines to protest against the action of the Mayor in extending a civic welcome to Mr. A. liruntnell, the paid advocate of tire Nolicense Party. As Mr. Bruntneil is under engagement to the .Taranaki Provincial No-license Party, I fail to see why lie should receive a welconve. any more than any other paid agitator who iniglit come along. Such welcomes an\ usually extended to any notable personage visiting the district for the first fl'mie, and this cannot bv. said of Mr. liruntnell, as he is already well-known in Xc.w Plymouth, having, as a member of the Salvation Army, lectured at' our street corners prior to last election. If the intended action of the Mayor is to lie established as a precedent in this direction we can expect to see every lecturer or agitator, whether on behalf of no-licen?e or the liquor traffic, formally welcomed, whioli to any rightthinking person would be thy height of jabsurdity.—Hi am, etc., RATEPAYER.
