By Telegraph.—Press Association. Asliburton, Friday. William Porter, charged with keep- 1 ilig liquor for sale hi a no-license district, pleaded not guilty. The evidence showed Hull defendant hail ordered and received large quantities of liquor under lictitious names. Defendant alleged that the liquor was obtained for others by liini in his capacity as carrier, anil not for sale by himself. Tile -.Magistrate held that it rested with defendant to show who received the liquor. As he i laded to do so. his Worship assumed that he had been guilty of keeping liI Ijuiir for sale. Accused was convicted f and lined £SO and costs. This is understood to be the first ease in tile Dominion i»i which a carrier has bevn called upon to show what 'has become of goods received by him for delivery. I i SVangaaui, Last Night. An Asliburton message to-day stated that a carrier was lined for failing to account for liquor lie had taken into a no-license district. It was added that this was the first the case in New Zealand. This is an error, a similar case | having been heard at Raetihi some time ago. Auckland, Friday. Ten out of eleven two-up players \\llio were arrested here on Sunday morning pleaded guilty at the Court to-day, and Hie eleventh was found guilty. The Magistrate remarked that : i-oine of the delinquent* wure little more than boys, and some were bald- [ headed men. For such men to go along on a Sunday morning and gamble with ' boys was disgraceful. These schools | would have to be broken up. Fines were in dieted ranging from £7 for old ; offenders to ,C2 for first offenders.
