Silt THOMAS BENT'S SCHEME. Melbourne, September 12. Sir Thomas Jn-nt (Premier of Vie toria), who lias teen indisposed ol' hite. states that when he is able to sec Mr. Deakin (Federal Premier) hi., intends to ask him why' England, Canada, New Zealand iuul Australia should not col l tribute (o the fon.ialioii of a navy, in eluding batik-shops, in the Pacific) and wily the United States should not eon tribute also, making the navy a joint concern. America, he says, lias interests in the Pacific which will be increased when tho Panama Canal is completed. The pres-onec of a united Anglo-Saxon navy in .the Pacific would steady a lot of the other nations. The contributing countries, he says, might borrow the money .to construct such a navy. Australia's share would be about ti10,000,000. When Mr. D.iakin was interviewed with .reference to Sir T. Bent's scheme lie asked to be excused saying anything about it.
