LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Last night's ollicial commercial cable from jjondon reports:—.Butter: Danish, llKs to I'.ills; Australian, none offering; Now Zealand, lllis to 118s. A fine show of daffodils of many varieties, hyacinths, Japanese peach blossom, aud other flowers is being made in Mr. W. Rowe's window, Brougham street. A female first offending excessive imbiber of alcoholic liquors was yesterday at the S.M. Court, charged with drunkenness, and was convicted aud discharged. The West End School Committee acknowledges the receipt of ,£2 from his Worship the Mayor towards the. gymnasium fund. Other donations have been promised, and more will be welcome. Spurred by the success of the "Daffodil At Home," the local Methodists have practically decided on an exhibition of roses, "the queen of flowers." In such a district as this, where flowers grow for the asking, there should be regular seasonable displays. For instance there could be the daffodil display, rose re-union, chrysanthemum conversazione, dahlia displays, and a carnation show. The Horticultural Society has declined to take this matter in hand, but it is evident that iro are not to be without our flower shows.

The Minister of Agriculture 15 reported to have said in tile House that the Agricultural Department had "put the dealers on their guard" with regard to the recent, importation to this district of chair infested with Californian thistle seed. The boot, to use a colloquial phrase, was certainly on the other foot, for not only did the local dealers discover the presence of tile undesirable immigrant but, without consulting the Department, refused to take delivery of tile chair or withheld it from sale. And tlvey continued to withhold it whilst the departmental investigation proceeded. ' The usual fortnightly meeting of; tile Wliiteley Band of Hope was held last night, when there was a good number present. The following programme was well rendered:—Pianoforte duet, Misses Brooke and Arnold; selections 011 the phonograph by Mr. Cliatterton; duet, Misses Jiullot and .Marriott; solo, Master James (encored); diret, Mioses Blanchett and Crisp; recitation, Miss Eileen MeGaliey; recitation, Mr. Scott. Tlie chairman, in his address to tlie children, was closely followed. The main klea dwelt on was tlie journey through life and the methods of travel—tlie pathway of virtue and that of evil. In appealing to the boys and girls to avoid the fascination of tils: public-house, he appealed to their love of home and parents and their outlook for the future.
