At Uiu Supreme Court to-day, John AVilier pleaded aot guilty of theft uf . hemp at Foxton, Evidence for tlio , Crown was that accused, who was employed in the New Zealand Shipping Company's store at Foxton, had removed five bales of heiup from the store, replacing 'them with bales of damaged hemp. fiutaequcntly ho had endeavored to dispose of the stolen hemp to millers in tile locality. Accused stated lie was a casual hand at the store, where Rcid was foreman. The latter asked him to sell some liemp for him, aad promised him £1 per bale for selling it. Ho had not known the hemp was stolen, and the jury returned a verdict of not guilty, and accused was discharged. Charles McLennan pleaded ■not guilty to breaking and entering the Central Hotel. Evidence for the Crown showed accused had entered the hotel by the fire escape during the evening of the oth mat. Ho was found in a lied room occupied by a hotel employee. Accused pleaded drunkenness, but'his Honor said he had heard of a 'drunken man falling downstairs, but nad never hoforo heard of one falling upstairs.
