A shocking disaster occurred at the Mount Morgan mine on Saturday evening, resulting hi the death of sewn men, named Irishman, Shepherd, l.Uithrie, Jury, Jlillyaril, (Jerrke, and Kyan. i They wen; employed in the 830 ft lovel. Suddenly and without warning an immense mass of earth and rock, estimated at IiOOO tons, broke away, tilling the level and burying the -seven men. Though it was recognised the position was practically hopeless, the work of the mine was stopped and rescue operations were started and continued throughout the night and to-day. They were attended with great danger ouing to furthvv debris falling. The la-t body was recovered tonight. All of tlte bodies were terribly mutilated. A great crowd surrounded the mine, where pitiful scenes wore enacted. Five of those killed were. Vnnrried. Just prior to the collapse a. man met with :ia accident. His companion accompanied liiin out of the fatal level. Guthrie (one of the victims) descended and took the injured mnnV place. The man who escorted his injured companion, on returning to work with fc\vo others, had a narrow escape. They were standing just outside the disturbed area when it collapsed.
