TATTERSALL'S WILL
The beneficiaries of the Tasmanian | Moutc Carlo—wlicre Tattersall's sweeps take the place of roulette tables, and the Government "stands in" with the proprietor for a share of the profits—seem to have reached an understanding which will give some practical effect to the founder's charitable intentions declared void for uncertainty. The High' Court of Australia has taken a solemn interest in the sweep-promoter's will, and supports the local judge; hut the parties to the will have agreed that charity gifts are to be paid out of the considerable sums of unclaimed money which "Tattersiill"' lias accumulated. Therefore, justice and the benelieiari >s are alike satisfied, (ieorgo Adams, the founder of the famous "sweeps," died nearly four years ago. He has lwen correctly described as not a clever man; nor designing, nor tactful, nor farseeing. He was not even educated. He was simply an honest man. He gave out that lie was that and nothing more. He lived up to his reputation so sincerely that lie died a millionaire. Almost his entire fortune was built up out of the sweeps, the support of which was •public confidence, founded on this one .man's good name—and the public itcli ( .for gambling. The chief beneficiaries .under his will mere his nephew. W. T. ■Adams; V. 11. Harvey, the brains of th■business; and K. K. Crant, co-manager under Adams and Harvey. Another ■beneficiary in the business is Thomas' ■l.yoas, the accountant, now joint mini siger. All the persons mimed get oncti'iith of the sweep profits. Kight otherget one-twentieth. The employees generally get one-tenth: and one-tenth, completing the total, remains for the furtherance of the sweep business. Thcharitable gifts, which, except for donations and annuities to friends and relatives, are distributed at the discretion of trustees, were to come out of the I testators estate and his business other than the sweep business. Now that the j *weep has to pay charities out of unclaimed monevs. the residue of lie estate goes chieilv. it appears, tojhpersons named above. And tlie'Tas-: ■manian (Invcnimcnt will >lill go mi col lectin?
