SPORTING.
AUSTRALIAN' NEWS. Received 1, 11.21 run. ! .Sydney, Last Night. The Mahcno's horses arrived in good condition. Scratching* For Epsom Handicap, Cross Battery; for the Metropolitan, Sea King. TURF TOPICS. (IS.v "Moturoa.") Splendid acceptances have been received for the Marton Jockey Club annual meeting, which opens t'o-dav.. In all races the number of competing horse, is exceptionally large, the smallest held numbering no less than thirteen, and punters will have their work cut out to find winners on to-day's card. Punt-
ing is not always attended with the success the venturesome ones deserve, and this is especially the case early in the racing season, when there is practically no form to go on. The presence of a number of local horses at Marton tends to make the gathering of greater interest to Tara-naki-ites, and the doings of Glenullin, Otaroa, Waihuku and Co. will be anxiously watched. The opening event, the Shorts Handicap, fell to Waihuku last year, and St. Claimer carried !)st into second place. Lady Menschikoll' has been pleasing her friends at Hawera, and Misstime (Uirkenhead—Miss Never) is another who ;.-. attracting a deal of attention. She carried off a double at the last Gisborne
meeting under welter weights, wmn:ng over live and six furlongs from fairly' smart fields. ' Of the Trial Hurdlers, Netherby won
the Ladies' Bracelet at the Wanganui Hunt Club meeting on Thursday. Lingerer has been jumping well, and on Saturday morning beat Otaroa ami Lyrist over live furlongs. Bad luck has been the lot of the Apreniont gelding, and he must owe his connections a ttay sum.
: Overtime, a five-year-old gelding by Musketry, won the Open Hack Race iii hollow style at the Wanganui hunters'' meeting, and shows promise of turning out a fair stake-earner.
Cloudy Morn had no difficulty in beating Cavil at Wanganui last week, and is evidently in good form. The j.\ew Zealand Cup candidate Uhlander died at Auckland on Monday last.
Misstime and Lady MensehikotF, who are in the Shorts Handicap, also SgTii'Samongst the acceptors for the Klecmc' Handicap. Glcnullin Ims been doing solid work on the local tracks, and bears a particularly rosy appearance just now. "Paddy" Eva lias worked wonders with the Taranaki Cup-winner of 1907. and he waii'.s for nothing as'far as condition is concerned. Comedian and Wailethe have been showing improved form lately.
The hard-worked 'chaser Loch Fync is being spelled. Last season the little fellow won seven times out of twentyone starts, and scooped in £1335 in stakes. Otaroa has been jumping and galloping well lately, writes "Observer" in the Hawera Star. The Renown gelding Researeli had an easy win in the Hack Handicap at the Wanganui Hunt Club meeting, and was steered by Charlie Jenkins. The attention of horse-owners and trainers is directed to the programme' of the Waverley-Waitotara Club, which is published in our advertising columns. This meeting has always been a popular one with owners, and the liberal stakes offered always attract a first-class crowd of horses. I hav'e only to mention the names of Uhlando, Dusky Morn, Dany Paul, and Immolation, all winners at last year's meeting, to prove the correctness of my assertion. Nominations for the meeting close on Monday, Oclolier 19th. A working lice is to be held on the racecourse on Monday to erect fences and do other preliminary work for the Hunt Club's meeting on Thursday, 10th instant.
