PUREBRED STOCK.
A FINE AYRSHIRE BULL. ' Mr. A. C. Johnstone, of Leppertou, has a line Ayrshire herd, produced by judicious introduction, of cattle from four of the best breeders in the North Island. Looking for a fresh sire, he travelled as far as Canterbury, and has now landed in New. il'lymoutli the line dark red (almost brown] and white rising four-year-old bull Syle of Inglewood (No. TO, Vol. VI., N./.U.M.), which he purchased from Dr. Levingc. Style of Inglewood is a line type of Ayrshire, with nice head and wide forehead. In fact he is extra good in head points, strong in the shoulders, straight in the back, and of robust constitution, with ample udder room. This bull took first honors at Invercargill as a- yearling, and last year annexed the first and championship at the Canterbury A. and P. Show last Xovembei, beating Marquis of Inglewood, iwho had held the record for three seasons. His breeding is unexceptional on both sides, the typical Ayrshire and fine milking qualities of his projectors being set out in the following' particulars:—-Style of Inglewood was calved in November, l!) 0 r >, by Mr. W. Rankin, Inglewood, Invercargill. He is fashionably bred, being by the imported bull Burnhousc's Prince John out of Meadow Queen. The dairy record is of the best. Meadow Queen was first as a 2-year-old in milk 1!)04, first as a three-year-old in milk 1005, and first as a cow* in milk and champion 1000 and 1007 at the Invercargill shows. The great-dam Sunbeam was first as a 2-year-old in milk and champion in 1001, first and champion as a 3-year-old in milk 1002, first and champion as cow in milk 1003. Sunbeam also won the dairy cow .prize three years in succession against all breeds at the Invercargill shows. Ladv Flora, dam of the grandsire, won first in the milk yield class at the agricultural show last year. That Mr. Johnstone has secured a most desirable animal is thus evident. It Is pleasing to notice that judicious importation and careful culling are 'working hand in, hand to exterminate what has been termed sarcastically "the Taranaki breed."
