The reception of the llect was a reproduction of tlie scenes of enthusiasm witnessed in Auckland and .Sydney. For the past week visitors poure:l into the city, and lief ore daybreak people began to stream out towards the bay. By 11 o'clock, ■when the Connecticut led the warships through Port Phillip Heads, the bulk of Melbourne residents had segregated along the foreshore or aboard the myriad of enif-s which covered the bay. The wdiite fleet was greeted by unbounded enthusiasm. Mr. Deakin and the Ministers and members of the Federal and State Parliaments, aboard a boat, met the llect and accompanied it to its anchorage off (lallibrand lighthouse. There was fine weather, and the gai'y dressed shipping contributed to producing a magnificent naval pageant. The usual salutes were fired. During the afternoon Admiral Kperry landed at St. Kildn pier and paid an oilicl.it visit to the Governor, and then returned aboard his flagship.
