FOOTBALL.
THE VKfTOKIAX TOUKXAJIEYT. Melbourne, August 27. The Tasmania-Jiuw Zealand match was very one-sided. 11l all departments Tasmania showed the more intimate knowledge of the gauie. The New Zcalanders' notable deliciency was in pace. The match Victoria v. South Australia, which was looked upon as the match of the carnival, resulted in a win for Victoria by 10 goals 15 beliinds to 2 goals 11 beliinds.
uMr. G. 11. Hartnelt (manager), -Mr. A. F. llardiug (captain), and Dr. l\ 3kEvedy (vice-captain) have from time to» time on their tour, in New Zealand and in -Sydney, voiced the necessity of a clean, spurting spirit in llugby I'niou football (says a Sydney exchange). It is therefore somewhat surprising that in the play of our present visitors from England and Wales little things have been done oil the lield of play in Sydney which are open to criticism from the ethical standpoint. \Yt» have already secu men held back and prevented from following up, we have seen dribbling forwards tackled low from behind, and we have seen one or two other little points of .play which are open to objection. When we see these tilings in local football wo strongly object to them. Our present visitors on the whole play the game in a line spirit but these little matters haw obtruded, and it is just a* well that they should lie mentioned. Tho voice of those in auUiority sdiould be upheld by every one of the lifteen on the lield. Precept hit- deeper when backed up solidly by practice.
