A ROAD RACE. The fact that a trotting match between New Plymouth and Rahotu was to be decided yesterday, coupled with the departure of Sergeant Haddrell in tile direction of Opunake, gave rise to a rumor yesterday that the police intended to interfere in the race, on the grounds of cruelty to animals. As a matter of fact, the race eventuated without any grave incident, Mr. J. Diygan's steed beating Mr. A. Hood's witn something to spare in 2hrs lomin—not bad going for a horse drawing a vehicle and two passengers over 32 miles of hilly road. The pace works out at aboat fourteen miles an hour.

Probably the most valuable shipment of thoroughbreds which has ever left New Zealand did so on Friday by the Moeraki for Sydney—the result of the Stead dispersal sale. In all, seven Australian purchases were on board the Moeraki. The ijiipment consisted of b f Golden Slipper, ISvrs., by MultiformAura; bh Multiform, loyrs., by Uotclikiss—Formo; brm Otterden (imp.), 13 yrs., by Sheen—Spring Morn; bin Isolt, Oyrs., Multiform—Bellicent; bin Sans I'cut, Byrs., by Soult—Forme; bm Saucer (imp.), 13yrs., by Sorcerer Anvola; brm Royal Plumes, 19yrs., by Hotchkiss—'lch Dieu. The above lot realised the high figure of 11,185 guineas l>y auction. By the same steamer the hurdlers Pretty Maid and Aeolus and Nancy Stair went to Sydney.
