A SLANDER CASE.

HEAVY DAMAGES AWARDED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A claim of £250 damages for allege ed slander was made in the Supreme Court this afternoon before Mr. Justice Cooper and a jury of lour, by Annie Stewart, wife of Thomas Stewart, laborer, Petone, against Mere Mierwood (a Maori), wife of Jeremiah Islierwood, Lower Hutt. The claim was in respect of words alleged to have been Spoken to the plaintilf by the defendant at Petone on March 23rd, 1008. The defence was that the words were not spoken as alleged, and that tiiey wore , not susceptible to the defamatory 'meaning alleged. Defendant also denied that plaintiff had suffered any injury. The jury awarded £2OO damages.
