ill-. J. A. Gilruth, Cliief Government Veterinarian, has left Wellington for Gisborne, en route to Auckland aii'l Melbourne. He will be absent from New Zealand about three weeks. Mr. Gilruth assumes his new duties in Victoria early in the new year. The death is announced of Mr. 11. Wallace, at Wlmremii, Wanganui. Mr Wallace was bom in Edinburgh in I 852! llr. Wallace came to New Zealand in 1880 in search of health, and soon afterwards settled in t'liristclmrch, where he commenced teaching in 1887. Mr. Wallace was appointed conductor (if the Liedertafel almost immediately after nis I arrival in Christcliurch, and was for some time conductor of the Musical •Society (afterwards the Musical Union), which he conducted until he left Christchurch for the sake of his health some little time ago. Mr. Wallac-o was al-o leader of the Christchureh Operatic Society during the term of its existence. He was an accomplished violinist. It is stated that Dr. McEvedv (vicecaptain of the English football' team) will probably settle in Levin. Dr. McEvedy is 11 New Zealander bv birth, and has'been in England finishing :iis studies.
