DISTRICT NEWS.

TAIUKI. (From Our Own Correspondent). At a recent meeting of the /School Committee a letter from the Education Board re observing an Arbor Day wis read. The letter pointed out the importance of beautifying the school grounds and encouraging the children to take an interest in arbor work. The committee, though unanimous in the opinion that this work was of the lirst importance, instructed Mr. Jemison, the secretary, to write to the Board point-

ing out that owing to tlie action of tlie School Commissioners in only granting i/'i acres instead of the 7 applied for, by the school committee two years ago, when the new master's residence is erected there will be very little space for planting trees without doing away entirely wiili the children's playground, which is too small already. There ~ro a good many acres of education reserves

in Taranaki that are little better than beds of noxious weeds, and the action of the .School Commissioners ill not al-

lowing the necessary amount of ground for a decent playground and plantation for a school ol this size demands some explanation, and it appeared to be <piite beyond the committee's' comprehension to suggest a satisfactory one. A successful concert and dance in aid of the Church of England General Fund was held on the lath inst. A feature of the evening was the performance of the Church Glee Company, consisting of Mesdaines D. Jones, Earl, Hancock, ind the -Misses Stratford, Walker (2), Gideon, Laurence, and Messrs. llancock, S. Walker, L. Walker, 0. Young, W. McClean, and T. W. Earl. The Canadian boat song was well rendered, and the musical sketch in costume, entitled •'Nice Young Maidens," fairly brought down the house and was enthusiastic-

ally encored. Amongst the other performers demanding attention were Miss Gideon, whose sweet and pretty Scotcli songs delighted the audience. Mr. Rudkin's tasteful rendering of the beautiful song "The Last Milestone'' was-much admired. Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, Messrs. Frewin, and the Sutherland brothers from lnglewood, helped to make the concert a success, and fully sustained tlicir popularity with a Tariki audience. A very enjoyable dance followed, Mr. <l. liissett acting as M.O.
