THE CONQUEST OF THE AIR

NEW RUSSIAN INVENTION. The airship built by the Russian inventor, M. Tatarinofl', is garnering in superlative praises from a section of the press (writes a St. Petersburg correspondent). if. Tatarinofl', after twenty years of scientilic experiments, is alleged to have discovered a new principle, which enables a balloon, although heavier than air, to be suspended in the atmosphere at any height. The ship itself is constructed of steel, possesses independent elevating force, is devoid of reservoirs, and develops considerable velocity. Liquid air plays an important part in this latest type of airship, which is being built in special wornshops. The strictest secrecy is enforced, nobody being permitted to enter the premises excepting M. Tatarinolf's five fellow-workers.

One noteworthy principle underlying the new invention is the case with which a. lighter body can raise a much heavier one, and not only move it rapidly in the atmosphere but also keep it suspended without motion. Thus an aeromobile weighing 01 cwt., raises and Supports a body weighing 321cwt., and moves it with a velocity of thirty metres per second, or about sixty-seven miles per hour. The power is developcd_ bi internal mechanism, consisting of thirty two different motors, eight groups, which can work either together or separately. Any one group can generate force enough to enable the airship to remain suspended at any height above the, ground. The new invention will, therefore, solve the problem of transporting not only persons but heavy bodies through the atmosphere.
