DISTRICT NEWS.

NGAIRE. (from Our Own Correspondent). Ngaire, generaly speaking, is one of those quiet little places by the wayside, having little or no news of its own, hence my silence of Jate; but the last ■week or two has certainly proved an exception. The aunual Sunday School social and the Christinas tree (although ill August) twere most successful, and last Thursday n'ight witnessed the Leap Year Ball given by tlie ladies of Ngaire. Perhaps it would lie more more correct to say a few of the ladies, the rest being apparently quite satislied to enjoy themselves at the expense of the energy of the noble few! .However, the promoters, Mrs. Beresford and the Misses N. Coilkin (secretary), A. Pennington. J. Bennett, J. Webber, ami M. Brake formed the committee and proved themselves equal to tlie occasion, ami carried •through, most perfectly, the best plain and fancy dress ball ever held here. The rather dingy hall was prettily decorated with ferns and greenery, aud the lloor was in excellent order. ■The ball opened with the Grand March lancers, fully eighty couples taking the lloor to the strains of the orchestra— Miss JDymond (piano), Messrs. Christof■fel (violin), and Beasley (comet). Some of the l'aney dresses 1 particularly noticed were Mesdames Ueresford (gipsy), 'Ardeu (powder and pal,'he.-), Hopper '(butterll.v), On- (queen of spades), Misses N. Godkin (shepherdess), L. Godkin (shamrock), Callaghan (gipsy), A. Itobson (Zingari), Davis (red cross nurse), IX and G. Fryday (two little girls in blue), M. West (Triumph cheese), K. Coleman (Japanese), Willis -(night), Waddoll (boot trade), A. Nielsou (ivy), A. Pennington (magpie), H. Pennington (Japanese), G. Coleman and dvnox (two little girls ill blue), B. Greilig (powder and patches), Bennct (queen of hearts), Messrs. Bob Plumuier (man frum Cook's), Stott (sailor), J. Pennington (gipsy), l-looper and J. Colemail (cricketers), J. Kirkwood (jockey). The M'sC. (the committee) iiiled the bill splendidly, and kept things well on the move till midnight, when a firstclass supper was handed round. After ■this bad 'been partaken of, dancing was again resumed, Mr. Stratford being selected to All the post of M.C., a duty which he carried out ill his usual able manner. A large number hung on to the bitter end, somewhere about 5 a.m., everyone voting their thanks to the ladies.

WAREA. On Friday night Miss Hughes, the Prohibition lecturer, gave an address ill tile hall. There were very few present, but those who did not attend missed hearing a splendid speaker. At the conclusion of the address Mr. Henry, who occupied (lie chair, tUiankcd' the audience for their attention. Mr. 'Mcliichlan proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Miss Hughes. This was carried unanimously. A meeting of the Warea Branch ot the N.Z.F.U. was held on Saturday evening. There, was a fair attendance. ■Mr. J. Burgess was in the chair. The resignation of the secretary (Mr. T. E. Larkin) was received, ami Mr. C. W. Revell was appointed in his stead for the remainder of the year. The only correspondence was a letter re Shearers' Accommodation Bill. The following re-, solution was passed: "That this branch of the Farmers' Union protests u» strongly as polite language will allo v against the absurd and ridiculous clauses contained in the proposed Shearers' Accommodation Bill, and trusts that nothing so unworkable will be put upon the statute books of the Dominion." A copy of the resolution is to be forwarded to the member for the district aud the Minister for Labour. It was also decided to hold a (lance on Wednesday, September 2nd, and the following committee was appointed to make arrangements: —Mesrs. .B. Anderson, A. Clothier., W. McLachlan, and T. E. Larking. The second competition for the vicepresident's trophy was fired for on Saturday. The day was fine and there was a fair attendance. The ranges were 200 yards and !JOO yards. The following were the scores: —
