A resident of Christchureh h reported to have come in for a remarkable- change of fortune. For th& past forty yeat'ri lie lias been the faithful servant, in tiie comparatively humble capacity of carter, of a well-known linn of warehousemen and importers doing business throughout the Dominion, .Xow it appears he has just successfully proved his claim to an estate in the Old Country, the value of which is said to run into nearly six ligurcs. Mr. Nat (luuM nni.it be the um*t pr<>i.lic writer of English lietion of his tini". Kven .Aliss JJraddon, with her sixty-one novels nuo.t give ])lace to him. Over seventy novels in seventeen years—the imagination reels at the thought of it. I'esterday morning a liorse attac-lhed to a buggy bolted from Johnston's store in Devon street east aud galloped at a nec'k-or-noihing pace in llie direction of EiUroy, turning up the Old Hospital road, liow the corner "was negotiated without a capsize is a marvel. i'ortuiiatuly for the owner, Mr. Ueo. A meeting of the Carrington lto-id Board was held on Monday night, Mr. C. Curler presiding. It was decided to pave a water-channel for a distance di sixteen chains from Mr. Cock's entrance gate downwards ow the south side of the road. The chainniiu and 'Ah*. McArtluir were appointed a committee to bring down a ivport a.s to the best method of draining the surface-water from the load near .Mr. Kerry's residence, with f» view id tilling in the present side drain. It was decided to commence the con-n-act work on III;- llrooklaiuls road on Ist October. The chairman reported that the hill from the borough boundary had been metalled, the footpaths properly formed and gravelled, the approaches to Shortland-slreet lifted and metalled. .Repairs had been authorise to Ihe JJrook-lands road, and on their completion repairs fo the road near the factor)- would be put in hand. It was recently reported by cablegram that three children had been burned, to death during a display of lifesaving given by the crew of one of 31 ; h Majesty's ships at .Durban, -Natal. From private advices received in Wellington from Durban, the facts are as fnilow:— Captain Lambert, of the Durban l''ire brigade (who will, no doubt, be remembered by many New Zcalanders then resident in Natal), with his men arranged the display, and placed his own two children <-u the roof in the house to be fired. This was carried out successfully, and aiTtingemcnts were made for a public display the next day, ami a very large number of people gathered to view the operations. Captain Lambert again placed his two children und ; another child on the roof. Through sonic mistaken signal tins house was lircd prematurely, witli the result that Captain Lambert's two children, aged 1) and .1, were both burned to death, and at the time the letter was written, a firemail had also succumbed to his injuries. Upon the election of Mr, J. Knowles to the directorate oi the Tariki'Dairy Company (upon completion of hi*■term as lirSir eiuuriniin) Mr. Stratford moved a vote of thanks to that gentleman. The mover spoke of the amount of work and time he had devoted to tile all'uirs of thv Company, and considered the ft'liareliohlei's should deem themselves fortunate in having such a man as their Chairman of Directors. ■ Judging from the acuity way the vuij of thanks to Mr, l\mnvU- ; was aivordi- i
