Playing with the sun in their eyes in the first spell, South Canterbury made the first score, Priest being responsible for a try, which Roddick converted. Shortly "afterwards, the visitors were penalised and Paytou kicked a goal, the first spell ending—South Canterbury o, Wanganui 3. On resuming, the Wanganui backi-i opened up the play, and Mitchell, as a finale to a nice passing rush, scored near the posts, Seeling converting. The Wanganui backs continued to keep the ball among them, and from another passing rush Mitchell again scored, but the points were not added to. The New Zealand team of Australian League footballers arrived hv the Moana from Auckland and was "welcomed here. The players have since left for Melbourne.

It is a free '! adaptation of Rugby and Association 8 rules, with eighteen players on each e side, a large playing field, and practically " no off-side penalty. The Australian ' game, which has made some little headway iH Wellington and Auckland, is now " in the jubilee year of its history, ind from the 19th to the 29th inst. a carnival to celebrate tile jubilee is to he held in Melbourne. At least a dozen representative contests are to be held during the ten days for the championship. Teams will lie present from all the Australian States, and also from New Zealand, whose 25 representatives have just arrived at Sydney. So great is the enthusiasm in the coming events that the supporters of the game in Western Australia will make the trip from Perth to Melbourne in a steamer specially chartered for the occasion, and a special train will carry the South Australian crowd from Adelaide. Mr. TT. C. A. Tlarrison. the founder of the game, will lie the central figure in the jubilee celebration?. and it goes without saying that the eongratulations will he many and hearty. |
