CANADIAN BUSH FIRES.
A' SEKIHING MASS OF ELAMES. CRIPPLING OF SMELTLNG WORKS. Vancouver, Au'gust tj. The Whole of the iiootenay district; away from the railways, is a seething mass of flames. The ruins of Fernie are smouldering and the fires threaten Michel. The Jidotenay Valley Smelting Company's operations are crippled, and 10,000 workmen have, been thrown idle. Unless help is forthcoming many children must die. Dollars for relief are being readily subscribed in Canada and the United BtMes. FIGHTING THE FLAMES. ANOTHER TOWN THREATENED. ESCAPE CUT OFF. Received 6, 11.45 p.m. 1 Vancouver, August 0. • All the mines in the Crow's Nest legion are shut down. A relay of miners is fighting the bush fire. Many inhabitants at Fernie .ire seeking refuge on the Canadian Pacific Railway. : The coke ovens at Michel are ablaze. ■ The town of Coal Creek, where fifteen hundred people are, is also threatened with fire, which is within three mibjs and cuts off escape by the west, except for two Indian trails over mountains which are impossible for women and children to traverse.
