Air. 0. J. Itcakes, of the Uoverniiient stall of veterinary surgeons, who went to Loudon to arrange tor a systematic inspection at Londou of meat imported from this country and returned to-day, states that he was able to make satisfactory arrangements for that object, and he kit everything in good working order. Mr. wraDb, M.l{.(J.\ ,SS., who was formerly in the service of the Mew Zealand Government, is. now acting for the Dominion as veterinary inspector in London, In br.nging this plan tu completion* Mr. Kenkes received every assistance from thi; English authorities. They did everything in their power to help. I Generally speaking, he continued, tyb' I found that the quality of Mew Zealand lamb was pretty well maintained, considering the dry season. Mutton did not seem to show any tendency to improve. Possibly the dryness of last spring and summer might have been a factor. 1L) saw much good-class Argentine mutton, and he was inclined to think that the tendency on the part of the Argentine article was to improve. Mr. Ueakos gav u attention to methods of handling -New Zealand meat bearing transhipment and transport from ship to cold store, and his con/ elusions will lie embodied in a report to the Government later on. .
incidentally, Air, Ueakcs got into touch with many leading men in tie veterinary profession in England and on the 'Continent, and acquired a good deal of very useful information. He profited considerably, ho says, from his interviews with fellow veterinarians. Among the many institutions which he visited were the Veterinary School and the Bacteriological School at London, the Pasteur Institute at Paris, and veterinary schools at Paris, Brussels, and Copenhagen, In Denmark he was much, impressed by the very thorough system* of veterinary education in force there. He spent a few days at the Copenhagen Veterinary College, and gained a thorough insight into the teaching methods in vogue there, Unfortunately, concluded Mr. Roakcs, he had to leave. England before the great agricultural show of the year, "The Royal," took place, but lie visited a eouplfj of other important fairs—ttrc Western Counties' Show at Bath and the Royal Counties' Show, and at both of them hei saw a considerable quantity of good live stock.
