London, August 4. In the cricket match Surrey v. Notts, Marshall took five wickets lor 10 runs. Sydney, August 5. The Australian Cricket Board of control has received a cablegram from the Maryiebone Club inviting an Australian team to visit England next season. PROFESSIONALS AND AMATEURS. Christchurch, Last Night. The New Zealand Cricket Council recently decided to communicate with the Maryiebone Cricket Club iu regard to the qualification of professionals engaged ill the Dominion, and ascertain whether the new rule would apply to a Dominion or provincial tca'ni playing imported professionals against lor'i'ign teams. The following opinion lias been received:—"lt. is the opinion of the M.C.C. Committee that a province in the Dominion of New Zealand is not included in the words 'a British colony, dependency, or State,' in the rules of county cricket, rule 1, whereby a residential qualification for an Englishl county is affected. It is thought, however, that evils will arise in Now Zealand if English professionals are brought over to take part in an inter-provincial cricket contest in that country.—F, E. Laeey, sec. M.C.C."
