CARGO PILFERING.
• A WARNING TO OTHERS. . By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin. Last Night. At tlie Port Chalmers Court to-day, Frederick D. Board tos charged with stealing nine packets and fifteen pairs of trousers, cargo of the steamer Waimate, on the high seas. Accused plead.'d not guilty, and alleged that the things were given to him when the vessel was in dock in London by a man whom he only knew as "Dick." Accused, whose duty it was to examine the pump wells, | had access to the hold where the'goods were stored. -Mr. Widdowson, S.M., said he was satisfied accused was guilty, ft was a serious offence. A pilfering offender was liable to fourteen years' imprisonment. This offence was difficult to detect, fioing about the cargo with a light constituted a grave danger to the vessel. As a warning to others he sentenced accused to forfeit £8 from due, in addition, four months' hard labor.
