WELLINGTON CENTRAL SEAT
By Telegraph.— tosta Association. Wellington, Lnst Sight. The Hon. T. W. llislop, Mayor of Wellington, was askcU by a deputation to-day to be a candidate for Wellington Control at the general election. He will give his reply to-morrow. It is understood it will be in the affirmative.
.Mr. 0. V. Punrco oi Pa tea West, lias been selected by the Opposition Party in the Patea electorate to contest the seat iu th« Opposition interest.
The appointment of a successor to tli<! Attorney-General would probably cause [ less friction in the ranks of the Government following than the choice of a Minister to succeed Mr. Hall-Jones (aa.vs the Wellington Dominion). There are many aspirants to Ministerial rank, dm the number would be greatly reduced if the vacant portfolio were that of At-torney-General. Should Dr. Findlay deem it worth while to go to London, , and be selected for the office-; the Government might, without any serious dislocation of the party, offer the portfolio and the leadership of the Upper Honse, to the Hon. 0. Samuel, wdio already oc-' cupies a seat in that Chamber. It is quite possible, however, that the Government may not make the question either ■ a political or a party one, and in that! case, with the consequent wider range of selection, its task will be easier and the choice likely to give more general satisfaction. [We do not think the Hon. 0. Samuel hankers after Cabinet rank. It is commonly known that the Attor-ney-General's portfolio could have been .his before had he chosen to awe/it the position.] ,
