LONDON WOOL SALES, Loudon, August 2. the total quantity of wool catalogued for (he sales jus I, closed was 201,582 bales. Of this there was sold to Home buyers 1)5,000 bales; to Continental buv-' (Us, 70,000 bales; lo American buyers, 13,000 bales. Towards ilhe end a weaker demand led to a. relapse. The closing prices were I mostly identical with the May closing rates. The only exceptions were medium to good merinos, both scoured and greasy, which were 7'/, per cent, dearer than in May; line greasy cross-bred, the price for which declined 5 per cent.; and scoured crossbred, which was Id per lb. cheaper. The Department of Industries and Commerce 'has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner at London, dated August 1: Frozen Meat.—The mutton market is (lull. Trade is very disappointing, there being only a hand-to-mouth demand. The supply exceeds the demand. Canterbury mutton 4d, Nortli island 3'/,d, River Plate ;ji/ s d. The lamb market"is a shade weaker, but there is good demand for prime quality lamb. Stocks on hand are heavy and are being widely distributed amongst agents, who arc pushing sales. Canterbury brands s'/ 8 d for heavy weights, s'/»d for light weights oilier than Canterbury s>/,d. The beef market is quiet. .Stocks of New Zealand brands on hand are light. The weaither lately lias heen unfavourable to the sate of beef. Hind quarters 4d, fore quarters 2%d.
Mutter.—The market is quiet, but linn. Supplies arc increasing, but there is good demand and no stock is accumulating. The prospects for next season are encouraging. Choicest New Zealand DCs, Danish 1225, Siberian 108 a, Canadian 110s per cwit. Cheese.—The market is quiet, but steady. Coloured makes s!)s, white (i2s per cwt. Hamp.—The market is dull and very little .business is doing. There is no change in prices to report.
Cocksfoot Seed.—The market is unsettled and speculative American crops arc being offered, ft is anticipated tliat the crop will fall short of the estimate. Nominal quotations are:—American 80s, New Zealand Sss for bright elean 171bs. seed. flops—The market is (lull owing to the English crop promising well. Wool.—The London sales closed on August Ist. Americans are buying and shipping suitalile parcels freely and the demand is likely to conitinue at present quotations.
