AUCKLAND DEFEATS MANAWATU. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday Night. The Auckland - Manawatn Hockey Shield match was played at Remnera to-day Ixvfore two thousand people, and resulted in a win for Auckland by -J goals to 3. The weatlicr was perfect, and the ground in splendid order. The Mauawatu team had to be. altered at , the last moment owing to one of tin: members sustaining a poisoned hand, and the combination was thus upset. Auckland secured a lead early in the game, Brook-Smi'th scoring from a corner. Shortly after Webb, for Mauawatu, equalised matters by ending a line run down the left wing with a goal, liefore the lirst spell elided Mason scored another goal for Auckland. The second half had not long cominenivd when Young further increased Auckland's lead, and Manawatn then commenced a strong attack, which resulted in 11. Eraser finding the net. Almost immediately afterwards Barry notched Auckland's fourth goal. Manawatn then made .strenuous efforts to score, and 11. Eraser again found the net. Willi a few minulles to go, and Mauawatu on the attack, play became very exciting, but Auckland's defence was too sound. ShirrilV, Auckland's skipper, at right full-back, played a magnificent game, defence, proving Manawatu's undoing. Nelson play Auckland for the Shi ■' 1 on Saturday next.
