THE UNEMPLOYED.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Chnstchurch, Last Nignt. Few applications for work arc now being received by the Labor Bureau. Arrangements have been made to send a dozen men to the Midland railway works next Tuesday or as soon as tm'o engineer in charge'has advised that camp accommodation is. ready. The city surveyor, who found work on behalf of the City Council for 40 men, stales that the number cannot be continned after this week, and nine or ten will finish on Saturday. The total number would be reduced gradually as the amount voted by the Council' for Hie relief works decreased. A large proportion of (he men had proved' themselves capable laborers, and some of Miem would probably be transferred to such loan works as could be conveniently takeu in hand at once. The acute stage of the scarcity of work had passed away with the wet weather, and there was every chance of men desiring work to get it outside the Council.
