Tlx;- old clerk felt deeply hurt that the younger ram should In' promoted over him. and complained In the manager, Feeling lhat this was a ease that could not be argueil, the manager asked the' old clerk what was the occasion of ail the noisl in front of their building.
The clerk went forward and returned with the ansiyer that it was a number of waggons going by. The manager asked what they were loaded with, and again the clerk went out and returned, reporting that lb 'V were loaded with wheat. The inanagrr then sent him to ascertain how liianv waggons there were, and he returned with the answer that there were 'sixteen. Finally he as sent to see where they were from, and he returned'snv'uig they were from Bootle. The manager then, asked the old clerk lo lie seated, and sent for the young man and said unto him: " Will von see what is the meaning of that rumbling noise in front?" The young man replied: " Sixteen waggons loaded with wheat. Twenty more, will pass to-morrow. They belong' to Romero &■ Co., of Bootle, and arc on their way to (he Albert Dock." The manager, turning to the old clerk, said: " .My friend, you see nuw why the voungcr man was promoted over you."
