NEW ZEALAND FOR SERVANTS.
The following letter appears in 'the Scotsman:— As a Scots girl in New Zealand, 1 should like to give my opinion in regard to the openings out here for domestic servants.
I have just read C. J. Munro's letter in the Weekly Scotsman issue of March 14th, and I may state he is (|uite. correct in saying a girl has a splendid opportunity to get on iu this country if she is willing to work. I camo out here only six months ago thinking that this climate would suit my health better than Scotland. 1 had not quite made up my mind what .1 would do when f landed. I had never been in domestic service in my life before. However, I got the offer of quite a dozen situations on my arrival, and I chose the one 1 am in at present. Perhaps I was lucky in striking one of the best, as it has tinned out—a splendid situation and.a good home. I have £45 10s a year clear money to myself, a haifday off twice a week, and 1 am free in the evenings us a rule by seven o'clock. And I had no experience to begin with. Of course, a great deal depends on whom one has to work under—one finds bad mistresses and good in New Zealand just the same as in the Old Country. Hut, on the whole, a girl has far moro liberty and is treated with greater respect, if she does what i 3 right and does her work with a cheerful spirit. I would strongly advise any girl coining out to this country to spend all the money she can on good plain clothing before leaving home, then she has a chance of saving money and of getting the benefit of her big wage. I shall be pleased to give any further particulars regarding the country, etc.— Happy Scots Girl, N.Z.
