The Daily News WEDNESDAY, JULY 29. THE CHIEF VETERINARIAN.
Tim ciibio announcing that Jlr. J. Ai Uilrutu, Chief government Wiui'inaiian, lias In'en appointed I'rofessor ol \ elcrinary fytiloiogy and Director of the .Stock Diseases' licscaich Institute of. Victoria at a salary of .CIOOO, will be received with a km sense of regret by tiie farming community tiiiougnout tile Dominion, ifr. (JilruLli is a man of tiie highest attainments, ami of worldwide celebrity ill his particular branch of science. As sucli nis ability is fully recognised in jNew Zealand, but particularly is his ability valuable by reason of 'his accessibility. Jl's methods, perhaps, savor somewhat of the unorthodox, but to that very reason no doubt much of his popularity is due. The farming community had never need to hesitate in asking His. opinion on any of the multifarious subjects tiiat concern iiis Department, and were always certain to receive a reply and advice to the point. Ilia advice moreover, whether supplied 011 paper or verbally, was ever couched in language totally devoid of technicality and abstruse Scientific terms. His loss to the Dominion just at a time when the Agrieul-| twal Department is developing along ambitious lines is sincerely to be regretted. It is pertinent to ask, however, whether, if Jlr. (lilruth's services are worth ' £IOOO per milium to Victoria, they are not at least equally valuable to this community?
