Visions of frivolity during "fleet week" and a host of invitations have tempted our worthy Mayor to take a little holiday jaunt to the northern capital, hobnobbing with the Dominion's elite at Gubernatorial, Ministerial, and Mayoral functions. At last night's meeting of tile Council Or. Collis was nominated as deputy-Mayor to act during his Worship's absence. The 'father of the Council," however, seemed to be contemplating a little iling, too, for he observed that there was a pos- j Uibility of his being away from New I Plymouth during that week. Should he be unable to act as deputy, Councillor Bellringer is to keep the mayoral chair warm for the time being. Councillor West has given notice to move at next meeling of the Borough Council Mint the £7OO allocated in the estimates for the renewal of the Powdorham street bridge be not Spent this vein-, but Unit the money be devoted to other ■channels, such as £llOO for kerbiii"' and channelling, 000 for drainage extensions, and .CIOO to provide nil ii]) 10-dalc water-cart in time for fiic coining summer. The District Engineer of Railways (Mr. I'. Jones) lias written to the Borough Council in reference to the interview between the Premier and the .Mayor in respect to the Esplanade. He slates that it has been decided that on the expiration of the current leases to Messrs. Honeylield and Scandlyn ion June 30, 1910, and September 30, 1910, respectively, the land will be leased to the Council at a peppercorn rental. The present lessees, he says, are prepared to accept £5 as compensation for the surrender of the leases. Mr. Seandlyn's lease is not likely to be affected by the Esplanade extension scheme. The' Mayor announced at the liorough Council meeting last night that the cost of purchasing the interests of Jlr. Honeylield was r.5, which would be paid out of the Esplanade extension fund. Labor-saving machines are time-sav-ing and money-saving as a rule, besides eli'ecting in most cases an improvement on the old baud work system. Mr. C. Carter, "The People's Grocer," lias just litted ti]) a modern slicing niacmne which fullils all the above requirements. This is a. contrivance for cutting rashers from rolls of bacon. The roll is placed upon r travelling platform. A turn of the driving wheel sends the platform along to the circular knife, which revolves under the same pressure. The result is a heat rasher of bacon, thin as a wafer, or as fat as a chop, according to the desires of the customer, the thickness being regulated by a guage key. By this means a pound of bacon will cut into more rashers than could be done by hand with a knife, and all the rashers are of even thickness. The machine is Solidly built, the bright parts being of nickel steel. One of the features that should appeal to lovers of tasty breakfast bacon is that the use of the machine will do away with the handling of the piece. At the S.JI. Court on Monday morning, before Jlr. 11. S.
