TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") New Zealand Cup weights are duo on Ist September. On Wellington form Maliaranui should prove a worthy Taranaki representative in the Winter Cup. Weights for the minor events carded for the first day of the New Zealand Grand National meeting should make their appearance about Friday next. Immolation and Compass havo been nominated for the Trial Moushen and Lingerer for the Enfield Steeple; and lHiritutu, Star Rose, and Compass appear in the Jumpers' Fl.it Race, one mile and a-half. All these events are run 011 the opening day (Steeplechase day) oftheC.J.C. National meeting. The late .Mrs. A. M. Coombe, in lur will, left Master Delaval to Denis Mor.ighan, who has trained horses for the late. Mr. and Mrs. Coombe for many years. Handicapper Wynyard's weight adjustments for the Auckland Fleet meeting should be declared to-day. A pair of ancients, the eighteen-year-old Tip ami l'ipi, rising fourteen, figure amongst the Fleet meeting nominations. Mr. F. 'N. Jones, the well-known totalisator proprietor, received a small amount of "conscience money" the other day. In an envelope, addressed in disguised handwriting, Mr. Jones found six shillings in postal notes, the butt of aic of the notes bearing the following scribble:—"This belongs to you, as at a race meeting once you paid me (is too much.—Horsey." And yet people say punters are not honest! It lias generally- been conceded that Dr. Shimose was fortunate to have his number hoisted after the Karori Hack. Race 011 Wednesday. The top-weight, Vasa, lost several lengths at the start, and only went under by a neck at the finish. Dr. Shimose niakos a noise, and will probably never show to much advantage over longer courses than six furlongs. K When Mr. ('. L. Lagor refused a thousand pounds for California, the Hawkc's llny sportsman evidently knew what a llier lie had in the stable. California's triple-event win at Treutham stamps liiiu as a great colt, his win on Wednesday proving bis gameiiess beyond a shadow of doubt, and his ability to gallop fast ami carry weight 'is now fully established, it; is a fortunate thing foi the fortv-two horses engaged in the Winter Cup that the slashing San Fran colt is .not amongst their number. The National Steeplechase and Hurdles candidates Kiatcre and I'aritutu are carrying themselves well, ami with .Maliaranui added Taranaki has a worthy trio to contest the Canterbury treble.
Star Rose was reported to be doing good work at Waitara prior to being railed to Wellington, but the New Zealand Cup winner finished a very bad last in the Jumpers' Flat Rate at Trenthani, and has probably grown cunning. Immolation ran gamely in the same race, and was only beat-en by a narrow margin for second place, but she made no for her defeat, by winning the Hack Hurdles from Ghoorka on Saturday.
King Billy liaa boon scratched for the Epsom and. Metropolitan Handicaps.
