THE UNEMPLOYED.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Asliburton, .Saturday Night. It is stated that there are 40 uneiuploved in Asliburton, but at a meeting called by one of their number for his afternoon in the main street, and which the Mayor and about 300 citizens attended, not one spoke or respended to the Mayor's invitation to air their grievances and be helped. Later, however, about IS appeared at the Council Chambers and interviewed the -Mayor, who took their names and occupations. These include farm laborers, general laborers, freezing work employees, tlaxmill and grain store hands, of them being married. Mr. Davis promised to do his utmost for the men and despatched the following telegram to the Premier: "A meeting of unemployed was held here this afternoon, and a number of men who submitted their names are willing to take work on any of the Government works. Can you find such employment V' Christchurch, Saturday Night.
Enquiries at the Labor Bureau today went to show that all who require work can lie placed on the railway construction works at Broken River, while .the city engineer this morning had no applications from really necessitous cases.
