TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD

The Education Board meeting was resumed yesterday morning, when all the ' memliers were present. finance COMMITTEE. ! The Finance Committee recommended ' that the architect be instructed to effect necessary improvements to the chimney \ in the High School class-room at Stratford; that the application of the Ingle- ' wood committee lor installation of Ihe electric light in the headmaster's resid- '■ ■Mice he granted on condition that onehalf of the cost is paid liy the headmaster; that the architect he instructed to have the necessary repairs made to the steps at the Wa'itara school; that the complaint of the unsafe state of the chimney in the Frankley school be referred to the architect, with instructions to have the same put in order; that the letter of the head teacher at Tataraimaka calling attention to the liad condition of the oven in the residence 1* referred to the architect, ami that he be instructed to supply a 3ft. range;, that the Norfolk road committee be "informed that tile Board will supply the necessary material for renewal of Hie fences around the school grounds, the committee to find all labour required, tlie work to be done to the satisfaction of Mr. Trimble; that the wire and staples be lupplied to the Puniwhakau commissioners for fencing; that a grant of £3 be made to the Dudley committee for the purchase of hedge plants; that the application of the Fitzroy committee for a grant to provide hedge plants and fencing to protect same be acceded to; i that the application of the same committee for battens to protect the base of the school building, and for posts and rails for renewal of portions of the fencing, be granted, but that the application for iron for new fencing be referred to the chairman with power to act; that 1 the Tongaporutu committee be asked to repair the tank and tank-stand at the school, charging the cost to the Board; that the Waitui committee's application for a grant of £4 for the purpose nf ' effecting improvements in the school ■ grounds be granted on condition that the committee raise an equal amount, and that their application for an addi- ! tional' acre of ground be referred to Mr. Morton to enquire into and report at next meeting; that the letter of the teacher at Te Kiri, asking for further improvements to the residence, be referred to the chairman, with power to act; that in reply to the Stratford committee's letter asking for a grant for the erection of a shelter shed, the committee be granted £7O on condition that a similar amount is raised by the committee, and that an application lie made to the Department for a grant of £7O, the amount of the Board's subsidy; that the application of the Hillsborough committee for repairs and alterations to the residence be referred to the architect, with instructions to have a rSige put in and to have the teacher's residence put in good order; that the following tenders be accepted—Tikorangi residence, ft. Hall, £395; Tariki residence, Boon Bros., £416; Purangi new school, K. W. Bond, £278 16s; Bahotu, additions to school and residence, £358. As the

amounts of the grants for Tariki and Purangi are not equal to the lowest tenders, and the grants for Tikorangi and Ranotu are in excess of the tenders, the committee recommend that applica-

tion be made to the Department for permission to use the amounts in.excess,

the deficiencies on the two first-named contracts.—The report was adopted. NEW SCHOOL DISTRICT. Twelve .householders on the Upper Kent Road petitioned the Board for the establishment of a new school district, to lie called the Korito school district. The reason for this step was that there was no possibility of parents of children attending the upper school being represented on the present committee, they being always out-voted by settlers on the lower end of "the road, with the result that matters at the upper end had been sadly neglected.

The Board decided to call a meeting of householders on 31st -Inly, at 7.M1 p.m., to elect a committee to define boundaries, Mr; Morton to act on behalf of the Board. TRUANT INSPECTOR'S REPORT.

The truant inspector reported that during the past three months he had had occasion to issue sixty summonses against parents and guardians for irregular attendance of children at schools. AIDED SCHOOL REQUIRED.

Uriiti road residents, through Mr. Charles Musker, applied for the establishment of an aided school. Mr. Musker offering to erect a room for the school purposes and another for the accommodation of the teacher, both on his proto the chairman, who was given power to act. COMMISSIONERS. •

The following districts having failed to elect school committees, commissioners were appointed.—Huiroa, Messrs. Phillips and D. Walkin; Waihi, Messrs. R. J. Ovehden and H. George; Marco, Messrs. C. E. Bacon and T. Davis; Huirangi. Messrs. J. H. Smith,' F. Loveridge, and P. E. Surrey; Tikorangj, Messrs. R. F. and D. Alexander; [Waitara, Messrs. G. Pearce and T. Buchanan; Lepperton, Messrs. C. E. Prideaux and F. Atkinson; Urenui, Messrs. ,A. H. Halcombe and 'Wilson; Opua, Mr. C. WooHord and another; Puniwhakau, Messrs. H. B. Worthington and Watchorn; and Mr. F. Styles' appointment to the Cardiff committee was confirmed. TONGAPORUTU. The Board decided to again ask the Department to re-consider the application for a residence for Tongaporutu, the Board feeling that the Department is under a misapprehension concerning the matter. Copies of the correspondence will he forwarded to the Taranaki M.P.'s, asking their assistance in regard to it. REGULATIONS AMENDED. The regulations were amended to provide that the head-teacher of a school' shall not only be held responsible for the custody and safe-keeping of all the school records, and when resigning leave all records in good order and condition, but " shall make in duplicate and sign a complete inventory of the maps, furniture, apparatus, etc., describing their condition. Such inventory shall be veri-

tied by the chairman of the school committee, with whom one copy shall be

left, and the other copy shall be forwarded on to the Board. The incoming teacher shall also check and report upon the inventory left by his predecessor. . . No salary shall be paid till this return is properly completed and received by the secretary." A BTG ORDER. The Secretary for Education, at Ms request, is to receive a return showing (1) the titles, publishers, and prices of all the books used in the primary schools which have been sanctioned for use by the Governor-iii-Cnuncil. distinguishable where obtainable those written or compiled by persons who are. or at any time have been, in the service of any Education Board in New Zealand, and (2) the same information with regard to all other liooks used in the schools. STRATFORD HIGH SCHOOL.

The Department, in respect of the Board's application for a grant for providing additional aecommodaton at the Stratford District High School, wrote

The Bird road committee's request for a teacher's residence and enlargement of the school, and for Venetian blinds. was referred to the Chief Ins|ieetor for his report. The Huiakama committee applied for a table and blackboard easel, and for new window blinds.—Referred to the Chief Inspector for hU report. The action of the chairman and Mr. Morton in sub-leasing the Board's late oflices to the New Plymouth Club wr.s confirmed. Mr. Brabant, contractor for the erection of the new school at Okoke, .uiplied for extension of time.—The Board declined to discuss the question now,, but would deal with it at the completion of the contract. Tenders will ho trailed for the purchase of the old residence at Tikorangi. The architect was instructed to ca'l tenders for the erection of a now school at Pukeho road.

At the Frankley school there are often sixteen horses running loose :-n the playground. This, of course, is not quite Hie thing, and an application has been made to the Education Board to provide piiddocking accommodation. The Board deputed the chairman to enquire into the matter and report at next meeting.
