In order to buv the lernc and furniture of the hotel I borrowed the money from Staples and Co. 1 borrowed £2(100, which was the price of the hotel. Airs. Bertie gave as part security the second mortgage of a lease in Wellington, the first mortgage being £450 W R Wilson was the man 1 bought the hotel from, and Skerrett and Wylie drew up the deeds. 1 gave bills for the stock for £2:10. I have paid all these. I did not keep any books while 1 was at the hotel. 1 kept a banking account at the Bank of Xcw Zealand in Waitara. (\t this juncture bankrupt said he could make no offer to the creditors.) My takings were between £UO and £7O a week. 1 was i u the hotel about ei«iit months. I had to sell owing to the low of some prosecutions by the police, f had £SO when f came out of Die hot"].' I got a cheque from .Skerrett and Wylie j
for £BO. 1 sold out for £2.')50. for lease and furniture, and I got £l2O for the stock. Skerrett and Wylie fixed' up this deal. 1 paid £7 a week for the hotel, and the expenses were heavy, .folmso.i, who bought me out, gave me four bills for the stock. These I discounted with
the Empire Loan and Discount Company. My wife has no private property of her own, except the leasehold property previously mentioned. I paid £9 a week wages, interest £3 a week, license 15s a week, lighting 15s a week, insurance 15s a week, and rates and taxes. 1 consider my expenses were about £2O a week. •[ paid about £3 a week in cash for small items. 1 paid some wages cash And some by cheque. To Mr. Townsend—l did not pay £OO or £7O into the bank every week.' f did not tell Mr. Johnson I took £SO a week, although I did sometimes take as much as £!I0. T did a good deal of Maori business. Mr. Johnson did not complain to me about the takings. T discounted the bills for stock in May. I paid some accounts. I do not gamble or go to race meetings.
