THE FIJI ISLANDS.
IMPERIAL GOVERNMENT'S INTENTIONS. Received 17th, 11.12 p.m. London', July 17. I In the House of Lords, Earl Orewej Secretary of State for the Colonies, in replying to a question, said the tenure of the unoccupied native lands in Fiji was communal. While rejecting the planters' proposal and not being in complete agreement with the alternative scheme, the Imperial Government was -willing, with the consent of the Council and the chiefs, that some of the land immediately required for occupation should be leased to those willing to develop it, but only rarely should native lands be sold. The proceeds, in either case, should be hold in trust for the benefit of the existing community and their successors.
