JAPAN AND AUSTRALIA.
SOLUTION OF AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE PROBLEM. AN IMMORAL IDEA. London, July 15. Dr. Arthur, of Sydney, in a letter to the Press, pleads that the introduction of a quarter of a million British emigrants annually would be the best solution of the defence problem of Australia, especially as against Japan. Ho complains of the withdrawal of British warships from the Pacific at a. time when a Japanese invasion seemed imminent. No wonder, he says, the Australians hailed America as a. possible supporter in their hour of trial. The Bishop of South Tokio, in a letter to the Times, says the Japanese do nbt entertain the slightest idea of invading Australia or coveting the Phillipines. The rumor of Japanese designs on Australia rests on absolutely nothing but the uneasy consciences of those who are keeping lands they cannot use themselves and who are certain that China and Japan must ultimately complain of the palpable immorality of the idea that white men may penetrate the Far East while the Far Eastern nations must not penetrate Australia.
