MISHAP TO A SUBMARINE.

WJule seven submarines were proceding from Portland lo Dover, on Folkestone, the parent ship, the Aelous, wiuch was accompanying, noticed Bub- , Jnarme A 9 lalling bemnd. Assistance ''■ Mn '' ® n< ' '' waa discovered there , bad been an escape of gasolene. Six of the crew were rescued in an unconscious state. Five recovered consciousness.
It is stated that Lieut Warren, irt command, and Lieutenant Groves, secwd in command, were both In the conBing tower. Noticing fumes, they sicnailed those below. No answer being received, the lieutenants descended and found the engines going at full speed.! Xhe fumes were overpowering, and the j crew were lying apparently lifeless. The lieutenants resorted to try and stop the engines.' Several attempts were made to enter the hall, but tailed. The fumes poured up the hatchway in volumes. A petty officer, summoned from the tower, in trying to reach the engines, fell un-' conscious. Then Lieuta. WaTren and Groves enveloped their faces in wet cloths and descended. They were rendered unconscious, but Lieut. Groves had reached the engines and turned off supply of petrol, thus stopping the engines. The rescuers found iiim stretched across the engines. One of, i the men is still in a critical state. stte accident is due to a spring connected with a valve failing to act.
