lington Pawnbrokers waited on the At-torney-General 011 Saturday to protest against tlio provisions of the J'awnbrokers' Amendment Bill. It was represented that the profits of the pawnbroking business were small compared with those of other businesses, and tnc

provisions of the present ll'll would reduce the profits by 7"> per cent, alien, it was said, pawnbrokers would have to

go out of business. Dr. l'indlay said there had been po great demand for yie Bill, but several cases had come to light in Diuiedin which showed that as Jiigii as 80 per cent, interest had been charged. The Moneylenders' Act was already

in existence, and the present measure was along the same lines. There was no complaint against the pawnbrokers who were doing a useful business, but the question was whether the business could be conducted with a lower margin of profits. He promised that, belore the Bill passed to the Council, he would allow the pawnbrokers to give evidence before a committee.
