BURGLAR PUNISHED. New York, Julj 10. Major Cooksou, of the First Essex Regiment, while staying at the Belmont Hotel, New York, was attacked by an armed burglar. After u desperate struggle in the Major's bedroom in the dead of night the burglar was overcome. When brought before the Court' the burglar said his name was Lcvine, and he was the sou of a wealthy laud agent, lie was tried and sentenced to ten years' imprisonment.
BRIDGE-BUILDING CALAMITY. Berlin, July 10. " Through the breaking of girders supporting the scaffolding on the new bridge at Cologne, 84 men who were working on the bridge were precipitated into the Rhine. Sixteen were drowued.
ROOSEVELT AND THE PUBLISHERS New York, July 10. Publishers offered President Itoosevolt £12,000 for a description of bii coming hunting experiences in Africa. The offer was declined. President Ilooscvelt lias arranged with Scribner's Magazine to accept royalties for accounts of his adventures.
PTOMAINE POISONING. London, July 10. A third death has resulted from th» ptomaine poisoning caused by tile eating of bad sandwiches at St. Anne's, in Lancashire. Others of the patients-arc in a critical condition.
TOURING CHOIR OF COLLIERS. London, July 10. The Royal Welsh Choir of males, consisting of twenty colliers, is sailing for Australia.
