A FATAL EUKOiv. Christchurch, Saturday Night. . An inquest was held this morning touching the death of Whs. Matthews, aged 73, a resident of Wellington street, Linwood, who drank some poisonous liniment in mistake for an influenza cure mixture on Wednesday, and died two days ago from the effects of the poison. The jury returned a verdict that death was due to 'heart failure, caused by the effects of poison taken bj mistake.
A GRUESOME FIND. Dunedin, Last Night. At an early hour this morning, the dead body of a newly-born child \\ as found wrapped in a sack in a box in North street, St. Albans'. The police, it is stated, have ascertained as to who the parents arc. An inquest will he hold to-morrow.
ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. I'aihape, Saturday. A niiin attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat with a razor at Ohaktme station yard last night. He was stopped by his mate and taken into custody. INJURED BY A SLIP OF EARTH.
Christchiirch, Saturday Nigllt. A serious accident occurred on Air. Harold Gardiner's I'nrau estate ycsterdav afternoon. A .young man named Juim Trigancc, aged about 22, belonging to Linwooil, was at work some two or tliree miles up the gully 011 the slopes of "Mount Herbert. He was grubbing tussocks when the ground, winch was soaked by Hie recent heavy rain, gave way, and he Ml over a cliff about .10 foot. The accident occurred about, 2 o'clock. A doctor was summoned from Lyttelton, and the injured man was placed 011 a stretcher located in a but 011 the hillside, and with some difficulty was carried down the hill and taken down to the wharf 011 a sledge, which had been brought up meanwhile. He was taken to T.yttelton in a laimrfi, and taken to the casualty ward where he was found suffering from concussion of the brain, and a bad scalp wound. He was then unconscious, but recovered consciousness later.
