BISHOP NELIGAN'S PvEMARKS. AN AUCKLAND PROTEST. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The recent utterances of Bishop Neligan in England have been the cause 01 a lavish expenditure of eloquence and newspaper correspondence. The latest protest comes from the Auckland district branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute. Miss Shrewsbury, ill bringing the matter forward, said "that silo understood from the newspapers that Bishop Neligan had slated that the name of God was not allowed to be mentioned in New Zealand schools. She wished to know- whether (his assertion had received any contradiction from tnc Institute. The president (Mr; C. &. Monro) replied in the negative, iljnd added that he thought the best thing to do was to treat, such remarks with,.contempt. No one would take much noljce of such assertions. Miss 'Shrewsbury was of opinion that f'ie -HiSmip's remarks on paganism, etc., mig'lit'well be ignored, but. tiie other matters to which ?bc had referred seemed to imply that there was „ rogulaffon lorbiddinV all reference to the Deity. In view of the present controversy ;,', England fiiclrau assertion might be used against the Education Act. She would c'li\illeii"e ISishnp Xeligai, t„ substantiate ]„„ statement, for it was evident that he knew nothing about the \ew Zealand Education Act, the schools, ( ,r the teachers. (Applause), hi common fairness t<> the Government alone under which they worked |,js statement should not pass unchallenged. She moved a resolution authorising an ollicinl denial of Misliop Ncligan's assertion. Mr. Murray seconded the motion. The motion was then put and carried unanimously.
