"SAN JOSE" SCALE
l!y Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night.
Mr. Boucher, Government l'omologist, ! who returned from the South this morning, was interviewed respecting the Sail Jose scale, which fortunately appears to be conlined to the Nqfs'on district. Asked by what means the pest may be spread, ill 1 . Boucher said that the scale when lirst hatched was very small, but quite active. "When on the move, it is quite possible for these Small insects to crawl on the legs of bees, llies or birds, which may alight upon infected trees, ami in this way be conveyed from tree to tree in an orchard, or from one orchard to another. ISo far," continued Mr. J!oiiclier, "we have seen none of the pest in the North Island districts. How ever, a very careful investigation will b,. made during the next few mouths. i see no occasion for alarm at present, is if discovered when the infection is just commencing, such a pest may be brought under control, and probably entirely eradicated."
