Alfred Lvttelton iiK|iiirwl if the British Government proposed to take action in regitrd to the percentage of deaths amongst the Portuguese natives of the Rand, which was 72 per thousand, while that among- Chinamen was only 12 to 20 per cent. Colonel -Secly, Cndcr-.Seeretary for the Colonies, said the matier was causing tin! Government great concern. It was primarily one for the Transvaal Government, who writ- making strikingly successful etlorts to reduce the mortality, hut the British Government would cooperate.
