"Mr. Marfcll moved that these three road districts agree to merge into the Taranaki Conntv. Sir. E. X. \j. Okey seconded. Sir. JlarfeU mentionetl that the Stratford Conntv Council struck a general and a separate rate over the county except where there was a roatl Imard. They bad this power when the general rates were insufficient to maintain tier main roads.
Mr. Slaunder pointed out that this meeting could not bind the County Council or attach conditions to the proposal for merging. The new- riding would have a representative to see that the district got fair play. Sir. Okey mentioned the proposal to still further divide the Omata riding. Should tliat come almut, he thought there would be differential rating introduced, for the rates in some portions would not maintain the main roads there. In answer to Sir. 11. (loodacre, the chairman said that the County Council had almost as extensive powers a* a borough council in regard to lighting. drainage, etc. The motion was then put and earned. without dissent.
Several suggested names for the new riding were put in, among them being "Suburban," "Carter." and "Huatoki." Thi* latter was put in the form of a motion bv Slessrs. Sfauudor and llanni* ter. and'it was decided to recommend the County Comfril to u*e this cognomen at the christening. Vote* of thank* to the originators ~f the movement, to the delegates, and to the chairman terminated the meet ing.
